I am getting really fed up with Forumer's forum hosting. You can't modify much of anything on your forum and they keep messing around with stuff that should be left alone in the first place. Plus, they have a history of being hacked, during which times I usually go on their forum and help them answer questions and assure users that things are being taken care of. Then, I see where they're changing something and ask if they are going to leave the option to keep what is currently available and they say "Nope, sorry". 50megstech/angry.gif

So, I propose that we move to my hosting plan. Yes, I know that when it's been mentioned before that we've said "oh but we can't keep our posts, we'd have to start all over!!" but honestly, are we benefiting from our current posts that much? I would even buy a new domain so that we could change from being related to 50Megs. The domain expires in October anyways, so it wouldn't be that much of a waste.

If we did, I would suggest using the MyBB forum software, which is free. You can see the software in action at http://sting.webelites.info which is a forum I made for the alliance I started on OGame. There are a number of plugins and skins for MyBB.

Let's discuss this for a little bit before we vote.

I voted for us to start a new forum through your host. The domain should definitely get more visitors. I think all of the active people on this forum will transfer over, and we can always leave 50megstech forum online. It would be a big change though and having to start new threads on say my c32 amg thread for the new forum would bother me some...

True... but we can repost some of the most important threads like you did when you moved your forum, which I looked at last night by the way.

If you think about it, there are what, four of us posting? Gt4awd, Zombiewolve, No2pencil, and myself. I do believe that we would all move over. If the four of us do move over, we couldn't really have any less activity than we do now, could we?

By the way, if I bought a new domain the 50megstech.com domain would be active until October, but then I would let it expire and we would have to go back to 50megstech.9.forumer.com.

If there is a move how do you intended on informing everyone? Or will you point the domain to the new forums?

Honestly, 3/4 of the people who would probably move over already know. I would send a bulk email out notifying people that we have moved. No, I wouldn't point the domain to the new forums, but I would let it remain here until it ran out in October. Then this forum would still be open because it does have some links to it. I could keep an eye on this forum in case anyone posts here so that I could refer them to the new forum.

I also thought of making all the forums read-only so that people can read the forum if they wish and also if we want to look back on something, we could.

I don't think you should set this forum as read only if or when we switch over to the new forum. People who use 50megs might still try to find their support forum and end up here at 50megstech. No reason to lock this forum anyways. Leave is open.

Im sure wierdo was talking about zombie when he mentioned 3/4th of the active members already knowing about this plan. Make sure to let us your opinion on switching forums zombie.

Yes, I was referring to Zombie. I was just trying to point out how few of us there are, so there's really not much risk other than the $10 or so for the domain, because I think we would all move over.

Yes Matt, you mentioned that we should leave this forum open, and I agree with your reasoning. It will remain open.

No2, I appreciate the offer but I would like the domain to be on my GoDaddy account. You could contribute via PayPal though.

Zombie, looking forward to your input. smile.gif

Alright Zombie. I'll send out an email referring people to this topic. Maybe we could get some more input and ideas.

Come to think of it, phpBB is another alternative. They aren't the prettiest looking forums, but they seem to become large forums.

I know, but so do I. smile.gif

I think I've ruled out phpBB as an option.

You know there are lots of cool mods that you could have took advantage of if you would have made the 100 post required to gain access to them, but you didn't want to do that for us. if you ad up all of the other post to all the other boards that you've started or posted on over the past 3 or 4 years you could have had access to them long ago.
And any board can be hacked and they all change things from time to time.
Theres some pretty cool forums out there that are hosted by Forumer only because those people did what was required to make them that way.
The only reason I signed on to this forum was to try and continue what
Mrknowitall had been doing for years and to keep his memory alive, but when 50megs launched there self help center (witch is some what like listening to a recorded phone message but not as annoying)... pretty much put a damper on us.
Mrknowitalls Html page no longer exist and some of his other pages are gone as well but his site is still up and running for any one that would like to visit... http://vpcr.50megs.com/. But regardless I'm not interested in starting over for something thats not going to gain any more attention - run by some one who's not going to go that extra mile, but go ahead and do what you want to do... you probably will anyway - maybe Ill tag along, I don't know yet. When you've been around as long as I have you get tired of seeing people give up on things.
And nothing ever became anything by giving up - and not going that extra mile, If you haven't guessed by now my vote is no to abandon this board unless you can transfer all of the post to the new one and keep the 50megs title witch would probably be more work then making the required post and getting some added features for this forum, Its not about 50megs - its in memory of Vince.

Fmods is so dead that it would be like talking to yourself.

Mods don't really give you control over your forum.

This forum was started to help 50Megs users. However, as you say, that self-help center kind of cut our 50Megs questions out. There are no 50Megs users here to help! This forum would definitely stay open for 50Megs users. I at least would check back every day or two to see if there were any 50Megs questions.

Ah, the good ol web 1.0 days! smile.gif Those were fun. I do miss him. sad.gif I remember one time when I had 7 posts at the old 50Megs forums I asked him to be a moderator, saying that I had learned a lot. laugh.gif He replied to me very kindly telling me to keep learning.

Not going to gain any more attention? This forum would be more widespread and not limited to one company. If anyone wanted to ask questions about 50Megs they would be more than welcome, and if they wanted to ask questions about GoDaddy, they would be welcome as well.

"run by some one who's not going to go that extra mile" huh.gif Well thanks.

Zombie, this forum will stay open no matter what for 50Megs users to post questions. I always try to get your input on matters before making decisions. Honestly, I don't see a future for this forum past what it has now, which is about a post or two every other day.

Vince was all about helping people. This new forum would help people. Maybe it wouldn't be 50Megs support, but we would be helping people. I didn't see any mention of 50Megs on his website.
